I bought a synology NAS recently. I had always been toying with the idea of getting my own cloud storage but had never acted on it until now. So far, it’s been good and loving it more every day. The one I got was DS216play which was supposed to be powerful enough to transcode 4K on-the-fly. I have not used it so far though but HD transcoding seems to be fine.
It was a learning experience setting up NAS. It was only until then that I learnt that my Internet Service Provider (ISP) was using a very wide private net and I will not have a public IP unless I opt-in for a static IP (which is chargeable of course). I heard that it’s not the case with other ISP but have not verified it. However, I started to receive hacking attempts (probably by bots) to enter SSH port of the Disk Station Manager (DSM). Only when I disabled the remote SSH port, the email notification of the hack stopped.
Once the static IP was granted, accessing NAS from external IP was easier. I did not need to deal with Dynamic DNS (DDNS). The NAS was connected behind a router so I needed to forward the ports needed from the router to NAS. Then, I purchased a domain from Namecheap. Previously, I was using Hostgator for hosting wordpress blog and its uptime has been okay so far. Usually, the downtime is reported within a range of 8 to 10 minutes once in a while.
Once everything was up, I had asked for a termination of Hostgator web hosting and requested for a refund but I had not received a reply from them. Hope to finish migrating current hosting to my NAS soon. Fingers crossed.
